Simple Breathing Exercises for Singers / Singing Lessons & Tips / Rock the Stage

In this episode, master vocal coach Kevin Richards shows you the “Little Esss” breathing exercise is a variation of the “sustained Ess” exercise in my other video. This is another fantastic way to build strength in your diaphragm muscles and to learn how to control your air flow while singing. The “Little Esss” is a dynamic strength builder for your abdominal muscles and for diaphragm control. It also helps strengthen your breath control for short powerful notes.

    first of all – lay off all the soda – more water.

    Your problems are quite common: lack of proper breath support & poor voice placement.

  2. hi, i hv been watching ur video..i gt a fren of my that can sing pretty well..i notice that his voice is full of intensity,bright and rich of tone..my voice is rather ‘thin’..is breathing exercise will help me to get a rich tone sound??

    Never listen to those who are negative – they are poison to your development. If I had listen to my Dad I’ve have never gotten where I am.

    You have an under developed mixed voice. Common problem. It most certainly can be improved.

    Singing lessons will actually improve your speaking voice. Singing lessons will help correct some bad speaking habits like slurring vowels, under enunciating consonants etc.

    There are many singers who have completely different sounding singing voices from their speaking voices. Tom Keifer from Cinderella, Blackie Lawless from WASP – even the old crooner from the 40’s Bing Crosby had a different singing voice than his speaking voice.

    It all eventually depends on the style of music you sing.

    you can inhale through your mouth sometimes – the reason you should inhale through your nose is because your nose warms and moistens the air before it gets to your lungs. Breathing through your mouth all the time dries out your mouth and your vocal cords.

    Open your mouth – now cover it with your hand – now sing an “Ah” – keep your hand there and breathe in through your nose – now sing “ah” again.

    If you can do that, you can sing with your mouth and breathe through your nose all the time.

  6. could you listen to some of my singing videos and possibly tell me what I should do? I have a friend who told me my voice sounds airy because I sing through my diaphragm but I dont push it hard enough, I have no clue if he made that up, but I figured I’d ask you, thank you in advance 🙂

    @defeatedwyvern – in a roundabout way yes. This exercises helps with training your body to hold back air – to reserve it. This is turn helps you push more air to get a louder sound. A more powerful sound voice comes from something called “cord compression”.

    @MegaXxemoXx – what you are hearing from Haley Williams is years of training and practicing her craft. To just expect to hit those notes with some advice from me or a simple YouTube video simply don’t do it. It takes structured vocal instruction and hundreds of hours of practice.

    this is awesome. i dont sing i scream so i really needed to know how to hold it. but i have a question… does this work if you’re fat? lol it seems silly to ask that but i feel like my gut kinda cuts off my diaphram from expanding as much as yours could.

    @drking9313 – your weight has no bearing on if it expands or not. If you breath in the way I demonstrate it expands. You just can’t see as easily than on my skinny ass!

    @SCREAMOpants – You have to have the mindset of “who cares” if you really want to become a better singer. Inhibitions are the killer of progress in any goal. Worrying about what others might think will always keep you from taking chances. F ’em.

    If you want to practice on the train try simply doing the sustained hiss exercise. Its quieter and the train noise will cover it.

  16. Sometimes when i sing a get a little light-headed, but only on challenging songs and i think it’s because i don’t breathe properly. Will these exercises help?

    @CrazeyKoaster – yes they will. If you are getting light headed from singing you are breathing in way too much for each phrase. Try to measure how much air you need for each phrase and only have a short supply of air left over at the end. If you breath in too deeply you will get light headed. Its like blowing up balloons while you’re singing. Singing, if done properly, doesn’t require a lot of air.

    @KukiwearsGucci – If you’re getting headaches it may be because you have a lot of tension in your jaw and you are clenching. This can cause headaches but I’d see a doctor if they are painful. Singing should never hurt.

    @123growasack – start with these exercises, then look at my videos on “not training and singing with ease. Daily routines should be breathing exercises and humming as high as you can without straining. This will help you connect with stretching your voice up and down.

    @smanders170 – you are contradicting yourself – God gave you a voice. God also gave you the brain power to make it the best it can be. If you don’t want to mess with what God gave you, don’t worry about expanding your range. You are stuck with what you have.

    I think God would think you a fool for not trying to develop the gift of singing to its best potential.

    @MrExtremeprotein – take in a breath and do a quick but strong “hissss” through your teeth. How it feels at your stomach is how it should feel all the time. Outward press.

    this is but one way of developing good breath control and support. Doing these alone will not give you great support. Its a process built over time.

    Vocal power, stamina, flexibility have nothing to do with a raised or neutral larynx or doing breathing exercises but training the specific muscles used for singing over a long time.

  26. my teacher has me do the hissing exercise. however she just introduced a breathing exercise where you disintend the stomach and slowly exhale but you keep the stomach disintended unlike the hiss exercise where you let the belly eventually go flat at the end. So now that I think about it I’m wondering what the purpose of the second exercise is. The both control breathing, but in what way? Why would one require u to flatten at the end and the other require you to keep the stomach disintended?
