FACT OR FICTION?: Did Lucille Ball know how to Sing WELL?–“I LOVE LUCY!”
Countless individuals have asked me whether or not Lucille Ball knew how to sing well or not. Well I go into the all details including some of her movies/musicals as well. What do you think? Was it all acting or was she a horrible singer and just took advantage of it for laughs?

According to the book “Desilu”, that was indeed Lucy singing in Mame, and according to the sound engineer, he had to take off his headphones… wasn’t too fond of Lucy’s singing voice. Perhaps to get a fair assessment of Lucy’s singing, good or bad, there were two occasions at least where she didn’t “sing badly” for the sake of a laugh. There was the Scotland episode where Lucy sings with Ricky, and then there was the duet where they sang “We’ll Build a Bungalow” peppered with jokes. Her singing voice, while high pitched, wasn’t “bad” here either. A little fun fact I don’t think I’ve mentioned… Desi didn’t want Lucille Ball to appear on talk shows because he felt that Lucille Ball was so different from Lucy Ricardo, that fans would be disillusioned to see her not in character. Since their divorce, she made a fair number of appearances on talk shows, and proved Desi wrong… she was liked just as much.
There were times when she was able to sing on key. But by the time she did MAME, it was old age the result of straining her voice doing the Lucy character, smoking, and drinking. Probably her best singing was in THE LONG LONG TRAILER and her routine with Red Skelton on the Comedy Hour Specials, where they did a duet, “Poor Us.”
Could she actually play the sax? It’s fairly simple to get a sound out of a tenor sax & the fingering is straight forward, too. I play the saxophone.
