Is it important to stay hydrated for singing, and will not staying hydrated cause me to strain or cough when singing?

It’s ALWAYS important to stay hydrated for all purposes, and singing isn’t any different. However, that may not always be the reason that you’re experiencing vocal discomfort, strain, or coughing when singing. What might be happening is that you could be falling back in your throat while singing, which will cause an irritation, and in turn can cause coughing while singing.

In this one I use the humming exercise, and my “crutch” of placing your thumb underneath your chin (on your swallowing muscles), so that you can feel if your falling back in your throat and your muscles are fighting you. The goal is for those muscles to not move much at all, so that your larynx doesn’t move out of place and your not falling back in your throat when singing, causing that irritation and coughing.
