I have a little expression/philosophy when it comes to listening to the singing voice. It will help you get your priorities straight! Here’s a hint: “When internal conditions are right and ready, the singing voice appears – not before.” – Lamperti (Vocal Wisdom, p.16)

    Hello Ms. O’Connor,

Many teachers use the word “technique” alot in that it is something to develop. When listening to myself as I sing and using objective listening tactics, how will I know if I have a proper technical foundation? Is there like a list of categories to listen for i.e, Resonance, Open Throat, Cord Closure, etc. It can be kind of frustrating because I want to develop proper singing technique and I have the discipline to work on whatever exercises that would be required, however, I don’t exactly have even an understanding as to what entails “proper” technique that so many teachers talk about. Hopefully this makes sense, thank you!

I can so relate to this, I do it to my teacher all the time 🙂 She is saying ‘that’s good’, and I’m like ‘yuck’. LOL. But you know what, after 3 years of working with her its really started to show, I’ve come to believe that she really does know better 🙂
